Typhoon Gaemi Wreaks Havoc in Taiwan: Cargo Ship Sinks

Typhoon Gaemi has caused widespread devastation across Taiwan, resulting in the sinking of a cargo ship and the grounding of several others. The powerful storm brought torrential rain, destructive winds, and hazardous waves to the northern part of the island, following a deadly path through the Philippines where it claimed 25 lives.

The Fu Shun, a Tanzanian-flagged general cargo vessel, capsized and sank approximately 19 nautical miles off the coast of Kaohsiung. Nine Myanmar crew members were swept overboard, with two rescued and one found near Fengbitou. Search and rescue efforts for the remaining six crew members have been hampered by the severe weather conditions.

In addition to the Fu Shun, five other ships ran aground along Taiwan’s coastline, including the Indonesian-flagged Iriana, Mongolian-flagged Basia, Tanzanian-flagged Xin Li, Cameroon-flagged Gian, and Portuguese-flagged Sofia. Fortunately, all crew members on these vessels are safe.

The Philippines is also grappling with the aftermath of Typhoon Gaemi, as an oil tanker, MT Terra Nova, capsized off the coast of Bataan province, spilling 1.4 million liters of oil. Authorities are working to contain the oil spill, which has the potential to become the largest in the country’s history.

As Typhoon Gaemi moves towards mainland China, it has weakened but still poses a significant threat with maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h and gusts up to 215 km/h.
