The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) have signed a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collectively address the challenge of decarbonization in the shipping industry. This partnership signifies a significant stride towards a greener future for maritime operations.
Experts Unite for Sustainable Solutions
By combining their extensive industry knowledge and resources, IBIA and BIMCO aim to develop groundbreaking solutions and initiatives that promote:
- Cleaner Fuel Adoption: The partnership will prioritize the development and use of cleaner alternatives to traditional bunker fuels.
- Sustainable Shipping Practices: Collaborative efforts will focus on implementing sustainable practices throughout maritime operations.
Key Areas of Focus in the MoU
The IBIA-BIMCO MoU outlines collaborative efforts in four crucial areas:
- Research & Development (R&D): Joint research initiatives, studies, and projects will explore innovative solutions within the bunker/marine energy and maritime sectors.
- Information Sharing: Both organizations will exchange valuable data, publications, and information to empower their respective members.
- Training & Education: Joint training programs, seminars, and educational resources will be developed to equip professionals in both sectors with the necessary skills and knowledge for a sustainable future.
- Advocacy: Collaborative efforts will address pressing industry challenges and advocate for policies that promote decarbonization.
Working Towards IMO Goals
“This collaboration underscores the industry’s collective commitment to navigating towards a greener future,” stated Alexander Prokopakis, Executive Director of IBIA. David Loosley, BIMCO Secretary General & CEO, emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration, highlighting that “working across all sectors that influence and support decarbonisation of shipping will be key” in achieving the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) GHG strategy targets.
