Hapag-Lloyd and IKEA Team Up for Sustainable Shipping

Hapag-Lloyd and IKEA Supply Chain Operations join forces to decarbonize container shipments from Asia, marking a significant step towards a greener maritime industry.

Reduced Emissions with Biofuel:

  • From March 2024 to February 2025, IKEA will leverage Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green 100 product, utilizing waste-based biofuels to significantly cut CO2 emissions by an estimated 100,000 tonnes.

Shared Sustainability Goals:

  • Hapag-Lloyd emphasizes their commitment to sustainability, highlighting IKEA’s dedication as a valued customer. Their Ship Green initiative supports their objective of achieving net-zero fleet operations by 2045.
  • IKEA focuses on long-term sustainability, aiming for a 70% reduction in GHG emissions from product transportation by 2030 and transitioning to zero-emission vehicles and vessels by 2040. While acknowledging biofuel’s role in immediate emission reduction, IKEA emphasizes the need for further collaboration towards zero-emission technologies.

Ship Green: Flexible and Sustainable Solutions

  • Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green program offers customers a range of biofuel options for reduced CO2 emissions, with choices for 100%, 50%, or 25% avoidance.
  • The program caters to all shipment types, including standard, reefer, hardtop, and tank containers.
