Container Ship MSC Capetown III Catches Fire at Colombo Port

A potentially catastrophic fire aboard the container vessel MSC Capetown III at the Port of Colombo was successfully extinguished by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Fire Brigade on Sunday (August 11th). The blaze erupted around midnight while the ship was docked at the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) Berth IV.

Swift action by port authorities prevented a major incident, with all crew and staff safely evacuated. The SLPA has confirmed that the fire is completely out and an investigation into the cause is underway.

Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva has commended the SLPA Fire Brigade for their rapid response and effective containment of the fire. A comprehensive report on the incident will be prepared, including findings from an independent investigation by insurers.

The MSC Capetown III, which had arrived from Singapore, was scheduled to unload nearly 1,000 containers and load over 800 before the fire broke out.
