Increase in Vessel Traffic at Vietnamese Seaports in the First Nine Months of 2023
In the first nine months of 2023, over 75,000 vessels have passed through Vietnamese seaports, marking a slight 3% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
According to information from the Vietnam Maritime Administration, during this period, a total of 75,110 vessel arrivals were recorded at Vietnamese seaports, equivalent to the figure in the same period the previous year. Among these, 33,530 foreign vessels arrived, representing a 3% growth compared to 2022. Meanwhile, the number of domestic vessels passing through the ports reached 41,580 arrivals, with a 3% decrease.
Additionally, the number of vessels for customs entry and exit decreased by 18% compared to the same period last year, totaling 4,930 arrivals, while the number of vessels operating in domestic routes also decreased by 3%, reaching 35,867 arrivals.

In terms of inland waterway transport, during the first nine months of 2023, a total of 261,380 inland waterway vehicles passed through Vietnamese seaports, marking a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Within this category, VR-SB inland waterway vehicles recorded 40,300 arrivals, reflecting a 10% increase.
The international passenger ship market has also shown positive signs. In the first nine months of 2023, the number of passengers passing through Vietnamese seaports increased by 9% compared to the same period in 2022, totaling 5.579 million passengers. Notably, the number of passengers arriving via foreign-flagged sea vessels increased to 175,000 arrivals.
Many international passenger ships have continuously visited Vietnam in recent times. Major international shipping companies such as Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Resort World Cruises have brought thousands of international tourists to the Vietnamese market since the beginning of 2023. Most recently, on October 27, two luxury vessels, Viking Orion (Norwegian nationality) and Silver Muse (Bahamian nationality), brought nearly 1,200 European and American tourists to Ha Long, Quang Ninh, to explore famous tourist destinations.
